How much tax do freelancers pay in Canada?

Self-employment income is taxed at two levels: federal income tax (brackets from 15% up to 33%) plus provincial income tax, which varies β€” Ontario, BC, Alberta and Quebec all differ.

Self-employed workers also pay both halves of CPP (Canada Pension Plan) on net business income up to the annual maximum β€” roughly an extra 11–12% until the ceiling. Two things to know:

A freelancer earning CA$60,000 faces an effective rate of roughly 30% once income tax and CPP are combined (province dependent). TakeHome Pro uses a blended 30% effective rate for Canada so the estimate stays realistic.

Frequently asked questions

Yes β€” self-employed workers pay both the employee and employer share of CPP on net self-employment income up to the annual maximum, on top of income tax.

Only once your revenue passes CA$30,000 over four consecutive quarters. Below that small-supplier threshold it's optional.

When do I pay my taxes?

Your return is due 15 June for self-employed people, but any balance owing is due 30 April. If you owe enough, the CRA asks for quarterly instalments. Set aside ~30% of each invoice.

My situation is different β€” can I set my own rate?

Yes. The calculator lets you override the default with your exact effective rate (for your province and bracket, or an accountant's figure) under the country selector.
